I need to fit some sort of stair gate, but don’t have a bannister!!?

I need to fit some sort of stair gate, but don’t have a bannister, can anyone recommend something similar until the chippy comes to fit it?
Just to say, my stairs are open. Hence as soon as my boy has started crawling I called a carpenter.

Argos have a extend-able child’s gate that can adjust to over 1m width. Its very cheap as well. We have a awkward position on our stairs so we got this as it goes right across the landing.
